Volunteering with SSI is a great way to get your feet wet in the film and theater worlds.
Our volunteers get exposed to film production, film production management, film editing, nonprofit fundraising, and more. They make an impact on the culture and on the lives of the many participants in SSI programs. And they also get great benefits like free admittance to SSI events and networking with industry leaders. You can help advance SSI's valuable mission while enjoying yourself!
SSI is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We are essentially an arts education organization and administer two valuable programs: Producing Unique New Creators (PUNC) and and Virtual Theatrical. PUNC identifies people with the unique talent, character and interest required to succeed in the visual and performing art of film and theater production. It short-runs the often decades required to get to a spot where one can make a contribution to the culture, by combining comprehensive curriculum with on-the-job training. The Virtual Theatrical program is different. Virtual Theatrical is developing new expressions and new technology in the creation of live theater, film and streaming media. It is designed to update theater and help it remain relevant as an art form in the new millennia. It also creates new forms of expression and storytelling which create new ideas and enhance the cultural landscape.
SSI's programs help people to learn filmmaking and movie producing. We find those who have a unique voice, and people with a passion to help those unique voices get to the world, and we give them the experience and knowledge so they can do it.
Do you have the skills to help?
Yes! Regardless of your skill set, age or location, SSI has a volunteer position where you can make a difference. if you can commit to a time slot of 2 to 4 hours at least once or twice a month (PUNC program participants must do 10 hours a week, but that is part of their career development training).
We will match you to functions where you can contribute. SSI has a broad vision and broad reach. We tend to do meetings virtually, so most positions can work from home. The exceptions are events like networking meetings and on-set production. On those kinds of assignments, some functions must be on-site. That could be in the Los Angeles area, or it could be elsewhere, if associated with a film or theater production.
What volunteer positions are available?
- PUNC and VT program administrative support: you can help with communications, research or outreach
- grants applications assistants - SSI has places for you in grant writing and outreach to sponsors. As a registered nonprofit, all donations are tax deductible under IRS rules.
- running or assisting with online classes, seminars and meetings - it's easy! You can help organize networking meetings or educational seminars and workshops for our film producing program. We usually use Google Meet or similar applications.
- research assistant: SSI has ongoing need for research in various areas, to keep current and to promote our programs. If you are good at internet research, or you are capable with AI research (or if you want to learn!), this is for you!
- Fundraising and Administration - It's rewarding to be able to connect benefactors who want to make a difference, with a nonprofit like SSI. Your strength might be networking or it might be sales - but if you are a people person, your can help arts and culture while enjoying the process!
